Are we truly teaching humility?

We commonly teach our children about ‘humility’.

“Don’t be arrogant — be humble”

But what does that even mean? Shrinking ourselves to avoid making others feels comfortable.

What is humility?

Downplaying oneself or pretending to downplay oneself ?

Are we truly teaching our children about humility when we normalize wearing the mask of downplaying oneself while we are beating others down?

One is not humble when he bullies.

Bullying is not some superficial matter to brush off as a playful tease, it goes deeper than that — it reveals a covert superior complex.

The common battle of who is arrogant: the sarcastic bully who has gained his crowd pleasing ways at the expanse of another’s perceived inferiority vs the one who finds confidence in oneself and true belonging after being bullied.

What is the true act of humility?

We can only humble ourselves when we recognize someone who has shown us our limited view. We can only ground ourselves by recognizing greatness bigger than one’s own; looking up to them with merit.

As the Giant, Issac Newton once said, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on ye shoulders of giants”.

Namaste.
